The First Contraceptives

The first contraceptives are considered to be Egyptian papyri pieces that are supposed to be dated by 1850
BC of the XII Dynasty. These fragments are thought to be the oldest papers that survived to the present
time. There is some unpleasant recipe that is described in this fragment and it helps to prevent getting
pregnant. According to the recipe you must put some crocodile dung to the inside organs and moist with the
honey or natron and after that you have to put the substance that reminds the gum inside.
Some other piece
of the recipe that was preserved up to the present time is the Ebers Papyrus and it is dated by 1550 BC.
This piece suggests to use lint tampons that are humidified with juice that is made of the tips of the
fermented acacia shrubs. |
